Building Basics

Step 1 · Beginner · ~7 min read

Building is what separates Fortnite from every other battle royale, and it's the single highest-leverage skill you can practice as a beginner. This guide covers the four pieces, the one turn you'll use constantly, and how to build for safety before you ever try to build for offense.

The four pieces

You have four building pieces. Learn what each one is actually for, not just what it looks like.

PieceBest use
WallInstant cover from gunfire. Your default panic button.
FloorBridges gaps, blocks vertical pushes, and stacks into height.
RampGains height quickly and lets you push or retreat to high ground.
Cone (Roof)Caps a box so enemies can't drop in from above.
Beginner tip Bind your building pieces to separate mouse buttons or controller inputs instead of scrolling through a wheel. Reaction time in a fight is everything, and scrolling costs you half a second you don't have.

Build for cover before you build for offense

New players often try to build elaborate structures in a fight and get punished for it. Your first priority in any engagement is simple: put a wall between you and the bullets. That's it. Once you're safe, you can think about height or pushing.

The 90-degree turn

This is the most common movement pattern in the game: ramping up while turning 90 degrees to gain height and reposition at the same time. Practice this until it's automatic:

  1. Place a ramp going up in your current direction.
  2. While still moving, turn 90 degrees and place another ramp.
  3. Repeat — you'll climb in a staircase pattern instead of a straight line, which is much harder to shoot.

The panic box

When you're caught in the open with no cover nearby, build a full box around yourself: four walls and a roof. It only takes about a second and it turns "instant death" into "safe to think." From inside a box you can heal, reposition, or build up for height.

Common mistake Don't forget the roof. A box with no roof still lets enemies build over you and shoot straight down through the open top.
