Rotation & Zone Play
More beginners lose to the storm than to other players. Rotation is the skill of moving with the zone instead of against it, and it's almost entirely about timing and map awareness rather than mechanical skill.
How the circle works
Each match has a shrinking play area shown on your map as a white circle, with the next circle's location shown as a smaller circle inside it. The area outside the white circle is the storm, which deals increasing damage the longer the match goes on. You'll get a warning before each circle starts closing, giving you time to move.
Move early, not late
The biggest rotation mistake is waiting until the last possible moment to move. Late rotations force you to run through open fields while taking storm damage, with no time to build for cover, and often directly into other players doing the same thing. Instead:
- As soon as the next circle is revealed, glance at where it is relative to you.
- If you're near the edge of the next circle or outside it, start moving immediately — don't finish looting the whole area first.
- Use vehicles, rifts, or launch pads when available to cover distance quickly and safely.
Rotating through cover, not open ground
When you have a choice, route yourself through trees, rock formations, or buildings instead of flat open fields. It's a longer path sometimes, but it means you always have something to build off of or hide behind if you run into a fight mid-rotation.
High ground on arrival
Where you position matters more than exactly when you arrive. Aim to end your rotation on a hill, a tall building, or any point with a clear view of the surrounding area — not in a valley or open field where anyone can shoot down at you. Reaching the new zone five seconds later on high ground beats arriving first stuck in the open.
Reading storm damage
Early-game storm damage is low enough that it's sometimes fine to take a tick or two of damage to finish a fight or grab loot. Late-game storm damage can take a third of your health in seconds. As a rule: the smaller the circle number shown on screen, the less you should ever risk being caught outside it.
Drills to practice
- In your next few matches, set a personal rule: check the map immediately after every fight and every loot stop.
- Practice planning a rotation route through cover before you start moving, instead of picking a direction as you go.
