Game Sense & Positioning
Good players don't win fights because they aim better โ they win because they were rarely in a bad fight to begin with. Game sense is the skill of gathering information and choosing your position before a fight starts, so the fight is already tilted in your favor.
Use your ears
Footsteps, building sounds, and gunfire from other fights all tell you where players are before you can see them. Playing with headphones is one of the single biggest strategy upgrades a beginner can make โ it's not optional if you're serious about improving.
- Distant gunfire tells you where a fight is happening โ you can avoid it or push it for a third-party opportunity once it's nearly over.
- Footsteps or building sounds nearby mean someone is close even if you can't see them yet โ stop and reassess before moving further.
Read the map, not just the terrain
Your map shows storm circle timing, but also gives clues about player density: named locations typically have more players early, while the edges of the map are quieter. Use this to choose when to fight and when to avoid contact entirely.
High ground is a decision, not an accident
Height gives you a better sightline, makes you harder to build up on, and lets you disengage downward in more directions. Whenever you have a free moment โ after looting, mid-rotation, or while waiting out a fight โ ask yourself if there's higher ground nearby you could be standing on instead.
Third-partying, safely
A "third party" is jumping into a fight between two other players once they've weakened each other. It's a strong strategy, but only if you do it with a plan:
- Approach from height or cover, not across open ground.
- Watch for a moment when both players are low on health or shields before engaging.
- Have an exit plan โ if a fourth player shows up, don't be the one caught in the open.
Building awareness of your surroundings
Before you commit to a fight, glance around for natural cover, height changes, and escape routes. Players with strong game sense are constantly asking "if this goes wrong, where do I go?" โ and they know the answer before the fight even starts.
